Blue Rockers
For Junior Members 10-18
Delaware Mineralogical Society Blue Rockers
Youth members of DMS are also members of the club youth group- the “Blue Rockers”.
The Blue Rocker group is named after Delaware blue gneiss, the local rock that also gives its name to the Delaware baseball team- the Wilmington Blue Rocks!
The youth group is a fun and interesting club, organized and run for youth to explore the world of rocks, minerals and fossils. We partner with the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science. Some meetings are at the museum- where we do hands-on activities. There are many outings each year to field sites for collecting and identifying “earth materials”.
Through membership in our club, families have access to a spectacular activity manual “Future Rockhounds of America”, provided through our parent organization- the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies. Using this manual, youth can choose from 20 topics of interest (Gold Panning and Prospecting, Fluorescent Minerals- to name 2 of them). We work on some as a group, but a family can also select one and work on badges outside of club meetings.
Meeting times are dates are not yet finalized (as of August 15, 2022)
We are in post-pandemic reorganization mode- and plan to resume meetings - at the museum- in September.
Check back for an announcement of our Blue Rocker Welcome Meeting!
Hope to see you there.
